5 Millennial CV Trends to Look Out For

5 Millennial CV Trends to Look Out For In a candidate-led market, the way recruiters are attracting talent is changing. If you want to be ahead of the game you need to expand the methods you use to recruit, especially when recruiting millennial talent. Millennials are an increasingly influential generation, meaning as a recruiter you can’t ignore their impact on the job market. Just as sites like CV Library disrupted the job search market when they spotted the improvements to made in job search by switching from paper CVs to Word documents sent via email; millennials are bringing about candidate led changes which are causing employers to change the way they think about selecting talent. 1. Video CVs Video CVs are fast are growing in popularity, with recruitment firms like Inspiring Interns using them as their sole marketing tool for their graduate candidates. With candidates looking to boost their applications and stand out from the crowd, this unique way for candidates to showcase their applicable skills and experiences is becoming more popular. Use videos to gauge a candidate’s personality, allowing you to better match them to the existing team the role would be part of. Consider factoring in killer questions to your application process, getting potential candidates to answer those questions in their video CV, helping you more effectively sift applications. Videos can also be a more appealing approach to presenting candidates to your clients or stakeholders. Incorporating this trend into your recruitment process can be a win-win for both your client/ stakeholders as well as any prospective candidates. Beneficial for stakeholders as they can get more from an initial application and a more digital-friendly method to attract candidates from the millennial generation. 2. Personal blogs Personal blogs are not just reserved for hobbies and can actually be a useful tool for recruiters looking to gain more of an insight into a potential candidate. Look out for any links to blogs within a candidate’s application or LinkedIn profile, reviewing their writing style, interests, and their passion. Especially blogs relating to the field the candidate is applying to can demonstrate their commitment, knowledge, and ambition to pursue that particular industry. Looking also into how they have potentially engaged with readers through their blog writing. Search for blogs online to widen your network of available candidates and reach out to potential candidates through their contact page. Going through blogs can add authenticity to a candidates CV and help you establish whether the claims within their CV are legitimate. 3. YouTube channels With over a billion YouTube user, this is a social media channel that can give millennials a great platform to share their passion or expertise. In a similar way to video CV’s, you will be able to see how they communicate and present themselves and how they interact with their viewers. Youtubers tend to upload new content on a weekly or monthly basis, giving you an array of content to review as part of their application. More and more candidates are adding links to this type of content onto their CV, giving you easier access. YouTube channels can help you establish a candidate’s suitability much more easily than relying solely on a written CV, helping in pre-screening to decide whether to bring that candidate forward for 1st stage interviews. Consider also searching for specific users and reaching out to them directly about your new opportunities. 4. Side Hustles Full-time employment is not the only way a candidate can display their marketable skills. More millennials are stepping out on their own and starting a side hustle. Whether freelancing or setting up an online business, a side hustle shows determination and the enthusiasm to achieve. Qualities that are required in any role. Question how they started their side hustle or how they win new business as well as how they balance this with their other commitments to gain a better insight into a candidate’s appetite to accomplishing outcomes under their own management. A side hustle shows a candidate’s resilience, self-motivation and can be extremely relevant for any position that includes a degree of self-management or the need to prioritize workloads or projects. Look beyond the 9-5 traditional employment to match relevant skills or experiences to your client’s or stakeholder’s job specification. 5. Charitable Projects Beyond reviewing a candidate’s experience, qualifications, and skills you should be delving into their extra curriculum activities including any involvement within charitable projects. Key skills such as organization, communication, teamwork and even leadership can all be demonstrated through these types of extra commitments. When comparing two similar candidates, these additional components could help highlight the more applicable candidate. Review their overall contribution to the charitable event and use this experience to further discuss how they proactively worked in a team or organized certain projects. Explore particularly any achievements or accomplishments a candidate gained from these experiences, tailoring this to how they could transfer these experience/skills into your or your client’s organization.

Personal Branding Interview Carol Roth - Personal Branding Blog - Stand Out In Your Career

Personal Branding Interview Carol Roth - Personal Branding Blog - Stand Out In Your Career Today, I spoke to Carol Roth, who is the author of The Entrepreneur Equation. She will be donating one book to SCORE.org for every book sold this coming week. In this interview, Carol talks about why now is the best time to start a business, the common qualities that all entrepreneurs have, the key items that you need to start a business, and more. Why has there never been a better time to start a business? The current zeitgeist is that there has never been a better time to start a business because technology has created many cheap opportunities to start businesses, as well as flexible, non-location specific options to start businesses. However, cheap and successful doesn’t necessarily equate to successful business opportunities. Cheap opportunities often mean less upside potential and low barriers to entry, which make it harder to meet your goals. Also, just because a business is cheap to start, you still have to have the capital to operate it, grow it and live on for a couple of years while the foundation of the business is established. It is easy to get sucked in by the hype only to find out that business ownership is much more difficult than anticipated. What gave you the idea to write The Entrepreneur Equation? As so many things that I do are, the book was born out of being pissed-off and frustrated at the information that was being put out to entrepreneurs. With up to 90% of businesses failing (or failing to succeed, I won’t debate semantics) within five years, I felt there was too much complacency; if doctors, lawyers or firemen failed at a 9-in-10 rate, everyone would be up in arms. But entrepreneurs- who risk their time and money- are being sold “seven magic steps to success” and that just doesn’t exist. There is no magic bullet for business success and entrepreneurship isn’t one-size-fits-all. Each of us has different circumstances, priorities, goals and objectives which dynamically change throughout our lives. So, there can’t be just one formula that fits everyone. I wanted to create a framework that could be used by an aspiring entrepreneur and existing business owner alike to evaluate the risks and rewards of a business opportunity against their own personal situation at any point in time. That’s what the Entrepreneur Equation is, and it’s meant to enable entrepreneurs to make better decisions and stack the odds of success in their favor- whatever success means to them personally. What are some common qualities that all entrepreneurs have? Entrepreneurs come in all shapes and sizes, but successful entrepreneurs are really those who prepare and who mitigate risk. Statistics prove that entrepreneurs who write business plans find more success than those who do not. And the more milestones you can achieve and risk you can take out of the equation, the more likely you are to attract investment capital and get to the next level. Plus, it helps if you are more of a “Santa” than an “elf”. Santa organizes the vision and orchestrates plan for Christmas, the elves execute pieces of the plan. Santa takes initiative, an elf waits for directions. If your personality is more like Santa, you are better suited (pun not intended) for entrepreneurship than an elf is. Can you name some of the key items you need before you start a business? Before you take the leap or invest in a new product or service, prototype and test it out with a defined budget that gets you quick feedback so you can assess the model. Once you have proven the market opportunity, make sure that you have enough money to support the business operations and live on for at least two years. You also want to make sure to fill in the gaps in experience and establish a network that will help you in as many facets of the business as possible. Plus, to maximize success, you need to focus on whether your business model and opportunity is “ABLE”: Remarkable does what you offer stand out in a crowded marketplace? Viable if the market opportunity isn’t big enough for you to earn a substantial profit, you may want to re-think the business. Scalable can it be grown exponentially for every resource (money, people or otherwise) you put toward it? Suitable does the business make sense for you? Does it achieve your goals and do the rewards of it greatly outweigh the risks you are taking on- both in terms of money and quality of life? If you are overwhelmed and overworked by your current job, you may need to make it more “ABLE”. Be willing to take a step backwards and re-evaluate your business model and strategy so that you can take a huge leap forward with your business. Can you compare a hobby, job and a business? How do you know which is best for you? Can that change? I call the three types of businesses: a “jobbie” a hobby disguised as a business; if you are working part time or earning less than the minimum wage with no viable plans to change that, you may have a jobbie a “job-business” which is a business entirely dependent upon one individual; if that person goes on vacation, the business stops earning money and a bona-fide business which is a business not dependent upon any one person to run day in and day out Each has its own risks and rewards, benefits and opportunities associated with it. The key is to understand what those are and what you are seeking out of an opportunity based on your own circumstances and goals at any given point in time. If you just want a hobby that makes some money, that’s great. Make sure to invest your time and money in accordance with that. However, if you want a bona-fide business, you may need to save up first in order to invest at the appropriate rate to achieve that. Any option is fine, as long as it suits your needs, the rewards greatly outweigh the risks and you proactively make the choice. The problem emerges when you don’t make the choice proactively and invest heavily and still end up with a jobbie or a job-business where the risk/reward equation doesn’t balance. Then you may end up overwhelmed and overworked. You want to be able to stack the odds in your favor and set yourself up for success. - Carol Roth helps businesses grow and make more money and is the author of The Entrepreneur Equation. How Co-Working is Transforming Cities

How Co-Working is Transforming Cities In the last  10 years, we have experienced one of the biggest changes in the work market: the rise of co-working spaces. Between 2005 and today, it grew from just 1 in San Francisco to 7,800 co-working spaces across the globe. In a year from now, predictions forecast 37 000 co-working spaces worldwide gathering more than 2 million people. If we do the calculation correctly, it means 29,200 co-working spaces will be created between 2017 and 2018. This means that 40 new co-working spaces will come to life every day until the end of 2018. The given numbers emphasize how popular this type of work environment has become, bringing a transformation to the work market which many people want to experience in every city. But why is co-working transforming cities? We travelled to 106 co-working spaces across Europe in 2016 to find out more. Renewing neighbourhoods Throughout our travels, we have seen how much of a positive impact the opening of a co-working space can have on a neighbourhood. It contributes to its economic development and business growth. In a recent survey we conducted, 60% of the coworkers said they chose their co-working space based on location and not too far from where they live. So just imagine how many people stay in their neighbourhoods and contribute to their micro economies? From consuming local to initiating local projects to getting to know their neighbours more. In Berlin, co-working spaces have completely changed the landscape of certain areas. Factory, one of the biggest entrepreneurial hubs in town, has reshaped an old building into a co-working space where Twitter, SoundCloud and Pinterest have set up their offices. And the neighbourhood is continuing to grow with rehabilitation of old buildings into apartments, cafe and restaurants. The whole neighbourhood around Factory now has even been renamed Silicon Allee, a spin off of the famed Silicon Valley in California. Bringing like-minded communities together When co-working started, the main target audience were self-employed workers who needed a place to work and not feel alone. Today, those hubs attract larger crowds of professionals adding startups, agencies, small companies or service providers to the map. Some have developed into even more focused places, dedicating their spaces to certain businesses only, providing a physical location where like-minded individuals can meet and learn from each other. We also found co-working spaces dedicated, for instance, to musicians only. In Berlin, Noize Fabrik provide them with the environment they need to work, record music and use the latest technology available on the market as well as a stage for live music. Instead of purchasing them for themselves, members can rent them from the space and use them for their own purposes. Another example is Maria 0-1 in Helsinki, which is an abandoned hospital that has been totally renovated and transformed into a startup playground. They gathered in-house startups, as well as a venture capital firm and tech journalists to let them work closer together. Such spaces are opening in every city, fostering skill exchange and matching, adding better qualitative content and value to the city they are located in. Fostering collaboration and innovation In certain co-working spaces, the concept of collaboration has been pushed further with the arrival of a new player in the game: corporate companies. This is a very interesting evolution of the work market because realistically corporates don’t need co-working spaces. They typically own their own offices, but they saw in co-working spaces something they could not find in their offices: easy access to deeper collaboration and innovation. In London, we visited work.life Camden and were surprised to see a Dr. Martens showroom inside their space. The brand office being located nearby, they decided to use the co-working space next door to showcase their products and meet with clients when they need it. In Berlin, we have seen another type of collaboration, not between corporates and co-working space, but between corporates, co-working space, and members. At the Rainmaking Loft, the startup hub Danfoss, a Danish corporate which makes buildings smarter through energy efficiency, sent 20 of their employees from all over the world for three months inside the space to let them build new business models. At one of the community events organized by the space, Danfoss found a startup working in their industry with whom they are currently working on a partnership. For corporates, co-working spaces are innovative and disruptive spheres where collaboration and innovation are fostered through the members and the work they do. Co-working spaces are not just physical spaces, they are content creation platforms, similar to small volcanos that erupt with the work done by their members. For cities, this is a real added value as it attracts more people from outside their border, to come and work there and get inspired by the members who made it inside their walls. As we toured around co-working spaces, we often heard stories such as this is where X started, X being a famous startup. More than just doing work, people want to live a new work experience. Welcoming a new crowd: Digital Nomads The Digital Nomads are one of the best illustration of a target group that focuses on living the new work experience. Digital technology has greatly changed the way people work and furthermore, the way they organize their life. Now, exploring the world can also be done while working. Co-working spaces have also developed in cities that before were mainly visited for holidays purposes. The nomadic workers have found in those spaces an easy access to a workspace as well as to a community of like-minded individuals with whom they can share more than just work environment. In Bali, a co-working space called Outpost, organizes surf classes and yoga lessons during the work day. Nomadic workers can plan their day around those and use the facility 24/7, which means that people working with Europe or USA can also work at night if needed. Creating a curated environment More than just a place to work, co-working spaces have transformed their space into a curated environment where members join a lifestyle more than a workspace. It is no longer about buying a desk, its about having a social experience. Co-working spaces are now a place where tenants can work, eat, meet and exercise without leaving the building. While in Barcelona, we visited apocapoc a curated co-working space, which defines itself as a Green Epicurean Co-working since 2013. The interior has been designed to let members use the space in an eco-friendly way. There, members can work, play, think, cook, share and be themselves among a community of like-minded individuals. Curation today goes even further. In 2016, some co-working spaces have introduced the concept of co-living, facilitating access to living in cities, like London, where finding a place can quickly become stressful. The Collective, a co-working and co-living space based in London have been among the first to bring co-living to life for their members and the outside crowd Improving work-life balance Co-working spaces, with their creative and inspiring environments, have transformed cities into better places to work and live. They highly contribute to improving the work-life balance of citizens by letting them work closer to their houses and by offering flexible services that allow them to focus on their work. In Brussels and Berlin, we visited co-working spaces that allow members to bring their kids to work, which is a service that has been offered to big companies for a long time but not to the community of people attracted by co-working. It relieves parents from the stress of leaving their children in daycare and give them better control of their day by not having to commute from one place to another to pick up their kids. Most of the co-working spaces we visited are placing well-being at work as a high priority. By offering standing desks, yoga classes, healthy food, running classes, or products that can improve their lives, they also support their members in producing better work, with a clearer and brighter minds. Co-working spaces are now fully integrated in cities’ landscapes and keep on transforming and adding more value to the real estate and work markets. They highly contribute to shaping the future of work as well as the future of cities. The interesting question to ask now is how will that keep on evolving? About the author: Coworkies  connects people between co-working spaces to foster collaboration. We support co-workers in finding jobs inside co-working spaces.

Writing Resume Rules That Will Help You Get a Job

Writing Resume Rules That Will Help You Get a JobWriting resume rules is crucial when it comes to securing an interview for a great job or to land that dream job. A resume is your first impression in an interview, so it needs to be perfectly written. The following are some important writing resume rules that you should always follow. Many different jobs and industries require different forms of resumes. Before you can start writing one, you need to think about the job that you want to apply for. Since some job descriptions can be very specific, they do not allow for a generic resume. They require a certain format. To ensure your resume comes out well, follow these tips.A career statement is vital when writing a resume. It should tell the reader what you are good at and what skills you possess. In your career statement, you should also include the job title that you want to have. By doing this, you will be able to give examples of your abilities in your career field. It will help the i nterviewer to decide if they would like to know more about you and give them an idea of what type of work you could perform for them. The next important piece of writing resume rules is to use correct grammar and punctuation. You should avoid the common mistakes that most people make when writing a resume. These include having incorrect capitalization, using improper punctuation and using abbreviations. This is a habit that many people do, so write a resume that shows your understanding of correct English grammar.Another common resume rule is to keep it short and sweet. Most applicants have too much information on their resume, and then the interviewer has to read it over again to find the exact information. An applicant with less to say than the rest of the applicants should be written down. A brief statement that explains why you would be a good fit for the job isbest. The last great resume rule is to check your spelling and grammar on the resume before submitting it. You want to ma ke sure that you are communicating with the correct messages to the company. This will help the company get the information that they need quickly. When you submit your resume, do not rely on them to proofread it or make any corrections that they may have suggested.Following these resume rules will not guarantee that you will get the job. It will ensure that you will get the job. But if you want to get that job, the best way to do so is to send out as many resumes as possible. Most employers want to receive many applications, so they will be more likely to send out an email or phone call to read your resume. If you submit a resume without the proper guidelines, chances are they will toss it into the trash. So remember, follow the correct writing resume rules. The information that you include in your resume should be perfect. It will show your interviewer that you are capable of the job that you are applying for. There is no reason not to follow these simple guidelines and applying fo r jobs should not be difficult.

5 ways digital fluency can close the workplace gender equality gap

5 ways digital fluency can close the workplace gender equality gap I recently came across a hopeful story for women and businesses internationally. It’s a story about the power of digital to disrupt the status quo â€" in this case the long-standing inequality between men and women in the workplace. A recent Accenture study reported some fascinating statistics about the connection between digital fluency â€" the extent to which people embrace and use digital technologies to become more knowledgeable, connected, and effective â€" and gender equality in the workplace. I spoke with Julie Sweet, group chief executive of Accenture North America, about what this study means for women and for businesses, and what surprised her most about where we are today with gender equality. 1. Digital fluency can close the gender gap In the workplace “We called our research Getting to Equal â€" How Digital is Helping to Close the Gender Gap at Work ,” Sweet said, “And at its heart we found that when men and women have the same level of digital fluency, women are better at using their digital skills to gain more education and find work.” What this means is that digital fluency has huge potential to help create real gender equality in the workplace over time. As defined by the study, that’s a workplace where men and women are equal when it comes to what they achieve in education, in their ability to find work, and to advance at work. 2. Digital fluency can help nations reach workplace gender equality decades sooner than they normally would One of the most remarkable findings to come out of the study is how quickly digital can accelerate gender equality in the workplace. The study found that if businesses and governments collaborate to help and train women to become more digitally fluent, they can potentially close the workplace gender gap in 25 years in developed countries versus 50 years at the current pace. “It’s important to reflect upon how far we’ve come in achieving gender equality in the workplace,” Sweet said, “and how we could move faster toward even greater goals.” 3. This doesn’t mean women have to learn how to code or become computer scientists “Digital fluency is about basic skills,” Sweet said. “In our study we looked at how men and women use digital in their everyday life, the number of devices they’re on, and their purpose in using them.” In fact, the skills women need to become digitally fluent are all well within reach. Sweet gave a few examples: Women could sign up for MOOCs (Massive Open Online Courses); use social media to grow their business networks; or enroll in training offered by their employers. Simply by mastering the basics of digital, and honing those skills over time, they can gain a critical edge in the workplace. 4. Digital fluency is helping today’s women better manage their time and become more productive Digital fluency enables greater work flexibility â€" an amenity that workers value and many companies are now providing. “While men and women alike are liberated by the balance that work flexibility affords,” Sweet said, “women appear to derive greater value from it.” In the study almost half of the working women who were surveyed said they used digital to work from home and access job opportunities and 41 percent said digital helped them balance their personal and professional lives. 5. Our daughters workplace will be a much more equal place Perhaps most encouraging about the survey Accenture conducted through its study is that nearly three-quarters (71 percent) of both the men and women said that “the digital world will empower our daughters.” “Our study comes at a critical time,” said Sweet, “because companies and governments face a deepening skills gap between the talent they need to stay competitive and the people available to them.” What governments and businesses can do in the short term is simply to raise awareness that basic digital skills are an important part of preparing and advancing in the workplace, particularly for women. And because women are underrepresented in the global workforce, they are a significant source of untapped talent. “Digitally fluent women can help companies and governments close this skills gap,” Sweet said. Clearly, if we take the results of Accenture’s study to heart, the changes we are seeing in women’s lives as a result of digital fluency are here to stay â€" and will become more pronounced with future generations.
